Our part-time programme is designed for participants from various backgrounds. It conforms to your lifestyle with a full-time job by minimising work-related impairments. You will be taught in a conversant atmosphere. On alternating weekends lessons take place from Friday evening to Saturday. In the course of the EMBA, four block seminars will take place, each lasting one week. Two of these block seminars include international study trips. This format is not only favourable to your full-time employment, but also provides a thorough, hands-on management education. After only 24 months, it results in a highly regarded double degree that will allow you to scale a new level on the career ladder.
1. Year – Focus on Management
Fundamentals of Management
The first term of the programme is designed to focus on analytical skills and critical thinking, while mastering the fundamentals of business management. In doing so, we will also work on you Personal Leadership Deveopment from the very beginning.
Social and Economic Behaviour
This course discusses state-of-the-art topics in behavioural and experimental economics. Based on an introduction to experimental methods, the course captures both individual and strategic decision making, with the latter providing a better understanding of what shapes social behaviour in groups. The course aims at making students familiar with the limits of research in the respective topics and with the skills to judge the quality of research in these fields, as well as to apply the research findings to economic and social behaviour in companies.
Business Decision Methods
The course highlights the importance of Statistics as a Decision Support System in Management. It introduces basic statistical methods and techniques and emphasises their application in a wide range of business applications. The course material is presented through lecture sessions which are used to review and explain the relevant statistical methods and techniques and promote discussion about their uses in business practice.
In this Management Science course we will explore and develop skills and techniques that will help candidates become effective decision makers. The course is multi-disciplinary in nature and links to a number of other areas, including finance, operations management, marketing and accounting, through the choice of cases, thus adding an analytical dimension to the teaching of these areas. The main objective is to improve managerial decision making in the functional and cross-functional business areas. We introduce a number of modeling concepts that are used behind the screen of many Decision Support Systems, including linear (integer) programming, Monte Carlo simulation and decision trees.
The course is focused on managerial accounting with an emphasis on planning, coordinating, controlling and decision-making. Management accounting’s strength is in its flexibility and its specificity to the problem at hand. The underlying theme of “different costs for different purposes” will prevail. In addition, there will be an occasion using accounting data as a means of performance measurement.
Organisational behaviour is designed to introduce students to key concepts and issues associated with behaviour in work organisations. It focuses initially on aspects of work attitudes, motivation; group and team behaviour and in the second half of the course, on issues of managing and leading, power, corporate culture and structural design.
In the course of the second semester, you will be able to expand these fundamentals and methods of business management up to advanced and specialised areas of management. Furthermore, you are going on a study week in Rotterdam.
Human Resource Management
Understanding how individuals and groups behave in organisations, and why they perform in the way they do, is the most challenging issue for managers and professionals. In addition to this issue, the individuals and groups change their mind-set over time (i.e. Generation Y). Human resource management has become the dominant approach in the management of people within organisations, with a set of distinctive assumptions, grounded strongly in certain motivational theories and well supported by research on excellent companies.
Marketing Management teaches you how to grow your firm through marketing leadership. The course will introduce you to the key marketing concepts and instruments. Moreover, it will show the strategic perspective of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) who’s overseeing a firm’s product portfolio. Key to developing a strategic market orientation is a broad focus and developing a long-term perspective.
This course will take you on a journey exploring the main elements of the subject and its importance and its role in delivering the purpose of the organisation. We will demystify the subject of strategy by adopting a practical, ‘hands-on’ approach and you will develop greater strategic awareness and confidence to work with complex strategic issues. As a strategist, you will acquire numerous analytical tools and planning frameworks to use in selected case studies, each providing you with an opportunity to resolve an array of strategic dilemmas.
Finance is the language of business. Understanding the financial statements of a company is a necessary and essential aspect of business management. In this course we explore the ways in which we can measure and then influence financial performance. Financing decisions center on the options available for raising capital such as debt and equity and the resulting cost of capital, as well as the risks and timing of cash flows. Investment decisions require managers to invest in projects or assets that yield a return greater than the cost of capital.
Supply Chain Management
The course will cover various key supply chain management topics, including supply chain segmentation and integration, outsourcing, supply chain transformation, demand planning, and digital supply chain 4.0. The course introduces concepts and approaches from business context and its main goal is to provide a toolset to managers to strategical manage the supply chain.
2. Year – Focus on Personal Leadership Development
Foundations and Practice of Leadership
For the third term you will have the opportunity to select three electives from a range of 30 subjects. Electives are for example Digital Transformation, Data Science, Brand Management and Financial Engineering. Additionally, you are going on an international study trip, where you given the opportunity to choose one destination from nine destinations in total.
This course builds upon the foundation laid in the previous accounting and finance courses you have covered. Broadly, the course aims to improve your conceptual understanding of finance, your familiarity with the terminology and strengthen your appreciation between the linkages with other courses – particularly strategic management. From a content perspective, the core theme of the course will be creating, measuring and sustaining corporate value.
Choose three elective courses from a range of subjects, e.g. Leading Transformation, Communication for Leadership, Innovation Leadership, Entrepreneurship and more.
Personal Leadership Development
The fouth term covers leadership development and the practice of leadership while fostering communication skills in lectures such as Business Sustainability und Leading Strategic Business Change. In this course you will also participate in a Leadership Retreat, which will give you the oppurtunity to prove your Personal Leadership skills.
Leading Strategic Business Change
Now, more than ever before, organisations need to become masters of corporate transformation. The current global and European economic context has forced governments and organisations alike to critically rethink how they operate. CEO's and leaders often ask whether or not there is a way to manage and implement corporate change more effectively, and if there is a way that organisations can harness human capital within the organisation to create sustainable change without destroying value? The course seeks to answer these questions and provide students with a thorough understanding of the latest relevant change theories, tools and thought ware to be able to deal with and successfully manage corporate change.
Business of Sustainability
Globalisation, increasing competition, tightened regulatory environments, technological leaps, consumer activism, and socio‐economic shifts dramatically shape and impact firm strategy, innovation, sustainability agendas, and hence, the competitiveness of the firm. The successful firm finds creative solutions utilising its resources, partners and a keen awareness of global trends to maintain a balanced position in a larger ecosystem of stakeholders. This course prepares managers in understanding the modern business and how it must prepare and act in order to differentiate from the commoditised models of the past decade.
You will finalise your Executive MBA programme with an in-company thesis. Here you have the opportunity to combine the knowledge you have gained through your studies with your current working situation. Since the preparation of the thesis will be time-consuming and it sometimes might even push you to your limits, it is important for the project to have real purpose for you outside of the academic world. Furthermore, your company will profit from your findings, as you will illuminate its processes from a theoretical perspective.
During the making of the thesis you will be guided by your academic supervisor. She or he will be able to effectively guide you in further developing the scope of the project, articulating the School’s requirements and providing advice in the research process.
